Can you play PS2 games on PS4? Not from a disc. A PS4 rejects every PS2 disc you put in it. You can still play a selected group of PS2 games on PS4 as digital re-releases. Buy them one at a time on the PlayStation Store, or play them through a PS Plus Premium membership.
Do PS2 Discs Work on PS4?
No. The PS4 has no PS2 hardware inside, and Sony never added disc support for PS2 games. When the feature was announced in 2015, the system description stated that “PS2-formatted discs are incompatible with the PS4 system,” as GamesRadar reported.
The drive can read the disc, but the console will not run the game on it. No firmware update or setting changes this. The same is true for PS1 and PS3 discs.
How PS2 Games Run on PS4
Sony built a software emulator for the PS4, often called “PS2 on PS4”. Each game is tested and packaged on its own, then sold as a digital download. That is why only selected titles exist.
The first games arrived on December 5, 2015. The PlayStation Blog launch post listed what these versions add:
- Up-rendered 1080p output
- Trophy support
- Remote Play, Share Play and Live Broadcast
- Digital manuals on a second screen
The games are still the original PS2 versions. They are not full remasters, so textures and menus look as they did in the 2000s.
How to Play PS2 Games on PS4
There are two official ways. Both work on any PS4, PS4 Slim or PS4 Pro.
Buy a PS2 Classic From the PlayStation Store
- Open the PlayStation Store on your PS4.
- Search for the game by name, such as Dark Cloud or Rogue Galaxy.
- Check that the listing says PS4 and shows “PS2” or “Classic” in its details.
- Buy the game and select Download.
- Start it from your home screen like any other PS4 game.
Prices vary by title. At launch, Sony charged between $9.99 and $14.99 per game, according to Push Square. Sales often cut that further.
Play Them With PS Plus Premium
PS Plus Premium includes the Classics Catalog. It holds PS1, PS2 and PSP games you can download and play while your membership is active. Premium is the only tier with these classics. Extra and Essential do not include them.
- Subscribe to PS Plus Premium on your PS4 or online.
- Open the PlayStation Plus app or store section.
- Go to Classics and choose a PS2 game marked for PS4.
- Select Download, then play it from your home screen.
In the US, Premium costs $19.99 a month or $159.99 a year, according to the official PS Plus page. Some catalog games are PS5 only, so check the platform before you download.
Which PS2 Games Can You Play on PS4?
The answer to “can you play PS2 games on PS4” also depends on the title you want. The list is small compared with the full PS2 library. Sony adds titles slowly, and some leave the store when licenses end. Rockstar, for example, removed its PS2 Grand Theft Auto games from digital stores in 2021.

What Carries Over and What Does Not
Many people asking “can you play PS2 games on PS4” want to reuse games they already own. This is where they get caught out.
- PS2 discs: Do not work, as covered above.
- PS2 Classics bought on PS3: These are separate products. They do not unlock the PS4 version.
- PS2 memory card saves: There is no official way to move them to a PS4. Your progress starts fresh.
- PS4 saves: Saved on the console, with cloud backup if you have any PS Plus tier.

So, can you play PS2 games on PS4 if a game is not on the store? Not officially. You have other choices, though.
